Hello, I have been reading on this site for a couple of days, Wow what alot of information. I am very happy to have found this site. My 62 year old mom was diagnosed with IV nsclc in december. I am concerned because she has not yet decided wheather or not to try chemo. She had no insurance when she first started feeling pain in her hip. We got her on a plan at our local county hospital, where 3 months later they finally diagnosed her. Finally got her on Medi-cal, (Medicaid) and have a second opinion appointment set up for next week. However, I feel like she is waiting to long to decide on chemo, the original doctor see saw, i feel like gave her no hope, and she is ready to let cancer take over her. Any advice on how to make her feel more hopefull and want to fight this would be great. Last year she lost a very close friend/family member to cancer after a 2 year fight, she is so fearfull to go through the same thing. I have 3 other siblings, but I am the youngest and live closest to her, so I am at her house everyday, calling her multiple times a day from work, and taking alot of time off to take her to all of her appointments. Where do I find hope for her, and give her strength to fight?

Danielle,

The final decision about chemo will be up to your mother but I know where she is coming from.  I saw my mother go through treatments and I lost her at age 66, I saw my brother go through treatments and lost him at age 59 and I said I would NEVER go through treatments if I had that decision to make.  Well I had to make that decision 6 years ago last Nov. and guess what I am here writing you and I am in good health now.   I was stage3a nsclc and had radiation and chemo together in the beginning of my journey.  I hope by sharing my story with you that you can pass it on to your mother to show her there is hope.  Diana

    Hi

I was first diagnosed in June of 10 and had a series of cyberknife treatments which shrank the tumor  but in sept.

of  11 had 3 suspicious nodules in the right lung.. I was very much against chemo and of course can't have cyberknife again.

My mother had a long struggle with chemo  and it seemed to me that the treatment was worse than the cancer. Hard to not compare her struggle with mine??   Anyway  while arguing with the drs I went in for another PET scan in Dec,  I was finally convinced that the chemo would help the transition no matter what happens. Got a Pet scan in Dec and two of the nodules have disappeared while the third has moved. Another scan is schedulked for June so chemo is on hold at least until then.   I will probably have the chemo  if the test in june is positive (hope not)!! lol.

Probably doesn't help much in your mothers case but can sure  understand the  struggle. having watched both my mother and father as well as both brothers go through it.. My own thoughts are that  there doesn't seem to be  much choice. BUT  the choice of no treatments seems to be the most difficult.??

Anway Good luck with whatever she decides.        gary
