I had surgery in October, removed a upper lobe. I am up early 5:30 and am pretty good untill around 2
Then I get exhausted and I noticed, I run out of breathe easy. My pulmanary dr says my lungs are good and I just need to excercise. I guess chasing after a 1/2 yr grandaughter isn't considered excercise.
I walk constantly.
I would just like to know if this is "normal" after surgery or is this as good as it gets. Either way I can deal with it. I just want to know. If anyone has any insights, I would be very grateful
Thank you
Kathy

Hi Kathy, I had a VATS procedure almost 3 years ago and then had radiation and chemo. My situation is a little bit different but the same in some ways. I still have some mucus and congestion. Sometimes I get some pain in the side where the surgery was. The docs say my breathing is clear when I get my check-ups so it must be alright. I guess it's just something we have to deal with. It's better than the alternative.

Good luck, God bless and keep the faith...

Hi Kathy, I have had very similar things as you and David. It has been 11 years since my surgery and still some days are better than others breathing wise. I do think walking will help just try to push yourself a little more each day. The breathing will get better and you will learn ways to get things done.

So it was 4 months ago that you had your surgery? I think you will continue to improve. Upper lobes are tough to lose but over time - as I understand it - your other lobes can pick up some slack. It won't ever be the same as when you had that lung tissue, but I do think it will improve more. This has been posted a few times but it might help too: http://www.youtube.com/user/lungexercise/videos

To be perfectly honest, I think if I woke up at 5:30 and played with a baby for a while, I'd be exhausted by 2pm too!

I too had my upper right lobe remove 4 years  ago. I still get winded easy I even still experince pain every now and then. It takes a long time to recover from this type of surgery.  Breathing exercises do help, but exercise is better if you can. I think it took me almost a year before I was back to being some what normal, but I have never fully recovered. Hang in there it will get better just takes a long long time.
