When I saw my oncologist six months ago, he said that in the beginning of my journey he really didn't think I would still be here.  Yesterday when I saw him, he said nothing has changed in my x-rays for a long time and since I actually hve been out of treamtnet for five years now he doesn't need to see me for a year.  I asked him if I could finally say I was in remission because he wouldn't let me say that until now and not only did he say I could say that but he said that the liklihood of my cancer retunring would be rare.  GOD IS GOOD!

That is GREAT NEWS!  If you don't mind me asking what stage were you diagnosed at?
Thank you Amy, David, and KDD for your kind words.  No KDD, I don't mind you asking...I was diagnosed in Nov. 2005 with stage 3b nsc in my right lung and a few lymph nodes.
Diana, my dad was just diagnosed with 3B nsc in his right lung and a few of his lymph nodes    He just started treatment and I see no immediate end to this journey, but he has remained completely positive.  I am so glad to hear that good things can happen with this terrible diease.  I'm praying I can report such great news with my dad some day.  Best of luck to you!

What treatment is your dad getting?  I started off with chemo once a week for 8 weeks ALONG with 5 radiation treatments a week for 7 weeks.  There will be an end to this journey but it will not be immediate but you sould like you have a sound head on your shoulders and I know you will have patience for your father's sake.  My daughter was 26 and my son was 34 when I was diagnosed and no grads at the time but now I have a beautiful almost 5 year old grand daughter to fight to stay here for.

I am happy to hear that your father has a positive attitude because I had it drilled in my head in the beginning that your attitude counted for 99.9% of your cure, in my case that along with a lot of prayers on my behalf.  Like Amy already pointed out to you, you need to ask plenty of questions and MAKE them give you the answers.  I always wrote down what I wanted to ask because you can get in the office and forget so much.  I always had either my husband or close friend with me, I never went alone because the more sets of ears the better.

So you are studying Crisis Management....that is a good subject for you and something tells me you will do just fine.

Just as a side note: we moved to TN 8 years ago from N.J. and we miss Jersey so much.  We moved to N.J. in 1974 and believe it or not we lived the first week there at the Holiday Inn/New Brunswick near Princeton while waiting on our furniture to arrive.   We ate most of our meals there in New Brunswick at the diner...........sure miss a good diner.  My husband's office was located up above an old book store in Cranbury near the Old Cranbury Inn.  It is a small small world isn't it?

I am going to add you to my friends list if you don't mind.

Presently my dad is getting chemo (carboplatin and docexteal) once every 3 weeks.  After his second cycle they are repeating the PET SCAN and then he is set to start radiation 5 times a week for 7 weeks.  We needed to change drugs because his kidney function was a bit high, he was orginaly suppose to start with cisplatin.  He mentioned to me last night that nothing is tasting right, and he has recently developed a fungal infection in his throat but other than that, he claims he feels great!

In the begining I wasn't so sound, I was more in denial and not willing to accept that my dad is sick and was praying I was in a bad dream.  However I quickly accepted that this is just a small bump in the road for my family to deal with and went into more of a fight mode to make sure he has the best dr and best treatment.  My brother (24) and I (29) are his sole caretakers...and its more me than my brother at the present time.  I have taken the advice I have received from this site to every dr appt and first chemo treatment.  I have a folder, notebook, and binder of information.  My dad laughs at me each time we go to a dr appt because I haul my info with me for those just in case moments.  Its become my security blanket lol

I am actually going for my second masters (it started off as a PhD but I quickly changed) so the class I am currently in is crisis managment.  It is quite challenging to work, go to school, take care of my dad, and have some sort of a normal life at the moment.  However I am managing, and have the support of my job at the moment to take whatever time I need off which helps tremendously.  We have a wonderful circle of friends and a wonderful boyfriend that have also been helping and I know the road is going be a bit bumpy before it gets better and I have accepted that.  My views and attitutdes since first signing up to this site have changed dramatically.  I am so grateful I have been able to ocnnect to such great people!

I love Jersey and will never move away.  I live about 10 minutes from New Brunswick...What a small world.  Please do add me as a friend

Hi KDD, I am an 11 years survivor of 3A NSCLC. Rt lung with lymphs involved. I had chemo, rad and removal of the two lower lobes of my lung. I'm 52 and he can beat this!

Thanks so much for the kind words John.  I have my fingers and toes crossed all works out for my dad.  So far so good, we are just a week into treatment but hoping in 17 weeks when his treatment is done, I can report some good news!

That is truly remarkable, you are a 11 year survivor!  Best of luck to you!
