My husband will be starting chemo in 4 weeks. Has anyone ever been on Gemzar and Cisplatin? I wonder how bad this will effect him..

Hi my name is Geri..My husband has been diagnos with NSC Squamous carcinoma along with Bronchoaveolar carcinoma and Carcinoid Tumorlet. Has anyone else had the diagnosis? He had half his Left lung removed and they found the BAC on the margin of the lung that was removed. He has stage ll a (2) N1 MO and Stage 1 NO MO. What does that bring for the furture with cancer in margin of resection??

No - I did not have any difficulty with my vocal cords. The nerves to the vocal cords run down through the mediastinum - they are called the recurrent laryngeal nerves (one for each side). They are fine threads and can be damaged during thoracic surgery. If stretched the injury may clear - if more trauma is the problem the nerve may not improve. Twelve weeks is long - I would have thought there would be some improvement by now if the nerve was just stretched.
I agree with the suggestion of a speech therapist. Unfortunately, whenever one has serious surgery such as this there are possible side effects. What did the surgeon say - did the surgeon say that the cause was due to injury to the involved nerves?
May I make a suggestion? Choose your battles - right now focus energy on the chemo - that will require all of your strength and definitely all of your husband's strength.I know the vocal cord problem is a real problem - and I know that you are both in a state of confusion (we all are when facing this terrible disease). You are both in my prayers.
Best and God Bless!

My cell type is adenocarcinoma with BAC - this is also a NSCLC (squamous, adenocarcinoma, and large cell are all Non-small cell lung cancers).
My initial treatment was partial lobectomy - I was a stage IA. When it recurred in my mediastinum (IIIA) I was treated with:
Carboplatin/paclitaxel for 12 weeks
surgery with resection of remainder of right upper lobe, hilar node dissection, and mediastinal node dissection.
followed by - Cisplatin and radiation for 8 weeks.
It sounds like your husband has 2 types? with the 2 different staging numbers - one is a II and the other is I...
Here is a website that talks about BAC
http://lungcancer.about.com/od/typesoflungcancer/a/BAC.htm
You should be able to ask your husband's doctor (or PA or NP) what the different cell types mean and what the different staging numbers mean....
The one thing I wish to say is no matter what kind of prognosis you are given - remember that there are many of us who are surviving and winning this battle.New treatments are discovered all of the time!
God Bless!
Karen
