my husband starts chemo next and was looking for a forum where others were in the same boat. I see posts where spouses are stressed because their affected person is too careful of infection. I have the opposite problem where mine finds it annoying to wash hands, not touch doorknobs, use disinfecting gel etc. and I am the one worried about the consequences. It is very stressful for me, no so much for him.

Hi Nancy, my dad has stage 3B NSCLC.  I was the crazy one disinfecting the house, bought the shelf out of hand sanitizer and had it laid out across the house, and the cars.  My dad seems to be very much like your husband.  I can tell you now that I have a lifetime supply of hand sanitizer left over because my dad used it maybe once or twice.  I was a basket case when my dad first started chemo, and followed everything by the book on the foods to give him, the cleaning, the disinfecting etc.  I can tell you now that I was to the extreme, but once he started treatment I remained careful and cautious but I didn't need to be so crazy now that I look back.  Towards the end of treatment I got a bit relaxed.

Hi again Nancy, can you give us some more information about your husband's type of cancer and the chemo he is going to be getting? Some with the specific types of treatments may be able to relay some experiences and some recommendations that may be helpful. Good luck, God bless and keep the faith...

I didn't go as bad as expected. I was tired and some nausea. Try to get Emend for anti-nausea, it's expensive but seems to work really well. Of course, I lost my hair. I have some long term Neuropathy and still don't have lots of energy.  In the long run it was all worth it. I have been N.E.D. for almost two years now... Good luck, God bless and keep the faith...

Thank-you for the good thoughts. How did the chemo go for you?  Nancy

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Do all you can and that's all you can do. I went through lots of chemo and radiation and could not avoid seeing my grandkids during the treatments. I never had any problem with getting sick from being around the kids. It's a choice between the possible risk of getting sick from the lowered blood counts and a diminished quality of life. Good luck, God bless and keep the faith...
