Stigma and Lung Cancer Research Study at Vanderbilt University

We are pleased to announce an opportunity for patients who have been diagnosed with lung cancer to take part in a research study that is trying to find out about stigma associated with lung cancer and how stigma might influence the way lung cancer patients feel.

We need patients who are willing to complete a one time series of questionnaires. It will take about 35 minutes to complete the study. This study does not involve medication or impact your actual cancer treatment. Questionnaires can be completed on the internet.

If you want to know more about the study or have any questions please contact Lee Ann Jarrett by email at lee.a.jarrett@vanderbilt.edu or by phone at 1-866-321-5866 (toll free) or 615-343-6313 (local calls.) Thank you.

I'm sorry I still find this hard to totally accept that smoking isn't the initial cause for certain types of cancer. BUT that doesn't mean that we ask for it. Do you know of anyone who didn't receive proper treatment from medical professionals because they knew that you smoked? I was treated with the utmost curtesy even when t hey knew that I had smoked. This toic is very hard for me to get a grip on because to deny that smoking had much to do with getting cancer is really a denial of all sorts of things...I knew and I think everyone here did to that continuing to smoke would perhaps cause cancer. How can it not be the primary cause if we smoke and then get cancer? I just don't understand this thinking at all.

I was the source of most of my own stigma when I was diagnosed. I was sure my smoking habit was the sole cause of my lung cancer. I've since learned that cancer is a very complex disease and we don't have the technology at this point to know that smoking is the primary cause. Even if it is the primary cause, we still deserve to receive proper treatment and respect from medical professionals. Good luck, God bless and keep the faith...

Hi Tammy,

Here's how we define lung cancer stigma in a brochure:

____________________________________

Stigma is the expression of negative attitudes toward someone or something thought to be socially unacceptable. This can lead to fear and misunderstanding and may result from lack of information. Stigma is not new and is not unique to lung cancer. Lung cancer stigma may cause a feeling of discomfort when others say or do things that unconsciously or openly blame you for getting the disease. Stigma can be experienced
as disrespect by you and can prevent you from getting the care, treatment and compassion you need.

______________________________

Not everyone experiences stigma, but if you have ever felt like someone said something to you that made you feel like they were blaming you for your disease, that would be stigma. In a way, it is both of the things you mention: You might feel placed in a category or you may feel like people think a certain way about you.

Hope this helps.
